Without a trace: Eritrean team defect to Kenya 0
It was unexpected, but they are not the only ones. Twelve members of Eritrea’s national football team have disappeared in Kenya after the end of a regional tournament they were taking part into. The following video by NTVKenya shows the situation in Kenya and the Eritrean ambassador reactions.
“The tour guide waited for them in vain at the airport on Saturday when the team was due to travel back home,” Nicholas Musonye, general secretary of regional soccer body CECAFA told Reuters.
“We think they are hiding somewhere with the intention of going somewhere, or just intending to remain here. We have alerted the authorities to help track them down.”
The players are supposed to have joined the tens of thousands of Eritreans who flee their country each year to escape an increasingly oppressive regime.
Reuters underlines also that the United Nations estimates that tens of thousands fled Eritrea in 2009, where analysts say a culture of mandatory national service has disaffected a generation of young people.
