Africanews24: a pan African television on the satellite 0

A new project dedicated to African media has seen the light of day. The TV channel Africanews24 will be launched following the success of the partner project Euronews24. The channel was presented on May 21 at the “Africa 53 countries, One continent” conference in Bologna.

It will be a pan African TV channel, based in Africa – rumours that it will be based out of Dakar or Accra have been circulating. The channel will be produced in several languages. It will air news selected from African mainstream media and programmes, such as documentaries and talk shows on African society and culture.

It will target a global audience, with a special focus on the African Diaspora.

“Each country has its local media but there is a lack of broadcasting organisations which can provide a pan African vision from the continent. The Ivory Coast national television has already joined us, but we are in contact with other broadcasters in order to create a TV network. In the first period we will host eight to ten partners,” said P.L. Malesani, Euronews manager.

“Our vision is inspired by Euronews,” added P. Cayla, Euronews manager at Lyon “because it has an international angle – it gives information both on Europe and the rest of the world – and it broadcasts in nine languages.”

It will be launched also as a website with a news archive that can be shared via mobile.

The direction has asked the United Nations, the World Bank and the African Development Bank to participate and to help finance the project.
