Women in African Arts 0

The Musée Dapper’s exhibition highlights the astonishing diversity of female depictions through nearly one hundred and fifty works, many of them truly exceptional. Till July 12 2009.

From birth to extreme old age, with the compulsory stages of marriage and multiple childbearing in between, women used to enjoy a very particular status – and frequently still do so in village societies. This often reflects an ambivalence characterized by a prominent role within the private, family circle combined with self-effacement in the community sphere which includes all the members of the clan.
