The growling drone of a generator reminds me, as I write of my visit to Lagos, Nigeria, that I am in a city where electricity supply barely exists, and that my hotel could not function without it. I have seen first hand a mad combination of unbelievable squalor and surprising elegance, of aggressive, rude scooter drivers and demure, polite people, of wallowing poverty and sophisticated wealth.
