Here Africa/5: Interview with Faouzi Bensaïdi

Faouzi Bensaïdi is a Moroccan film director, actor, screenwriter and artistHis film A Thousand Months was screened in Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2011, Death For Sale premiered at the Toronto film Festival. The film was selected as the Moroccan entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards. Bensaïdi is among the African artists of Here Africa exhibition.

Here Africa/4: Interview with Zineb Sedira

For Here Africa, Zineb Sedira will be exhibiting 4 photographs from the series Shipwreck: the Death of a Journey (2008) and The Lovers (2008), which record rusting boats and detritus in a ship graveyard situated in Nouadhibou, Mauritania. For Sedira, these images are portraits where life, death, loss, escape, abandonment and shipwrecked journeys meet. The subject of her images is a contradiction: both a toxic graveyard and a source for survival and hope for young Sub-Saharan Africans to reach Europe. Here Africa/3: Interview with Frédéric Bruly Bouabré

Frédéric Bruly Bouabré was born in Zéprégühé (Ivory Coast) in 1919 (although his officially recorded birthdate is 1923) and died in Abidjan on January 28, 2014. Bruly Bouabré’s first writing dates back to 1940, but it was not until 1970 that he began transposing his art on postcard-sized pieces of cardboard — a technique that he kept unchanged until he died.

Here Africa/1: Contemporary Africa through the Eyes of its Artists

From 6 May to 8 July, Art for The World assembles for the first time in Switzerland a unique collection of contemporary African art and performances including approximately 60 works of more than 26 interesting artists from the African continent. In partnership with the Swiss NGO, Afronline.org will publish opinions and interviews of the personalities involved in the exhibition. Boubacar Boris Diop: “National cultures and literatures, a major political issue in Africa”

Brussels – “We have to teach the original national language, which is far easier than French, and develop a national culture, a national literature. This is a major political issue”, says the intellectual Senegalese Boubacar Boris Diop in an interview published in the catalogue of Here Africa/Ici l’Afrique, an exhibition curated by Art for The World which will assemble a collection of Contemporary African art (from 6 May to 8 July, Geneva).
