Valletta Summit: EU and Africa, so close but so far

Brussels – Malta is ready to host 90 delegations and 45 leaders for the EU-Africa summit on migration in La Valletta on the 11th and 12th November. Symbol of the tensions present between the parties, Morocco and Egypt, who are both respectively heads of the processes of Rabat and Khartoum, will send only foreign ministers. Valletta Summit: at least Civil Society invited, but too late

Fixing a glaring omission as requested by civil society leaders from Europe and Africa, EU and African governments have agreed to participation of two representatives of civil society as observers in the high-level  Valletta Summit on Migration expected to convene at least 50 heads of states in both regions 11-12 November in Malta. Organized by the EU, participation in the Summit had originally been reserved only for governments and international organisations. continue reading »

Fortress Europe Creaking at the Seams

With EU leaders today in Brussels for a summit on the Greek financial crisis, it is easy to forget that they are also here to discuss another Greek crisis: one of migration. Along with its Mediterranean neighbours Italy and Malta, Greece is the arrival point in Europe for thousands of African migrants. An Amnesty International press statement released today states that a fact-finding mission in Greece shows how “poor planning, ineffective use of EU funds, and a hiring freeze has left Greek authorities incapable of meeting the needs and protecting the rights of refugees”.
