Heavy Toll of Disrupted Farming, Higher Prices and Displaced Livelihoods

Large agricultural harvests in some regions of the world are buoying global food supply conditions, but protracted fighting and unrest are increasing the ranks of the displaced and hungry elsewhere, according to a United Nations new report. Some 37 countries, 28 of which are in Africa, require external assistance for food, according to the new edition of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s Crop Prospects and Food Situation report.

Kenya-Somalia border fencing on course

The fencing of three kilometres of the Kenya-Somalia border is complete after the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) took over its construction over two months ago. The project, initiated by the Ministry of Interior in 2015, has since been switched to wire fencing along the porous border.

Do Amina a favour, forget about Dadaab for now

Kenya said on Wednesday it was delaying the closure of Dadaab, the world’s largest refugee camp, which houses nearly 300,000 Somali refugees. Kenya, which holds that Islamist militants from neighbouring Somalia use the camp as a cover for their incursions into the country, has been under intense international pressure to give the residents more time to find new homes.

The agenda was dominated by discussions over the opportunities of an investments plan and those elements useful for the definition and implementation of a coordinated Italian strategy and precise communication scheme. The majority of African migrants move between countries on the continent

Immigration to the West accounts for less than 50% of all global migration according to data from the United Nations. Most people move from one non-Western country to another, yet their stories are rarely told. Journalism about immigration focuses overwhelmingly on those coming to North America and Western Europe, even though individuals who move within the Global South make up the majority of refugees and migrants.

Is the EU’s migration partnership approach with African countries balanced?

Brussels – The implementation of the Valletta Action Plan and the EU Migration Compact for cooperation on migration with African countries are not perceived as balanced or as being conducted in a spirit of true partnership by all parties, writes ECDPM’s experts. This risks undermining the EU’s image as partner in the area of migration and development and may undermine principles of good donorship.
