WFP’s Chief Calls for Support for Those Most Vulnerable to Climate Change

Pemba (Zambia) – With El Nino affecting countries in southern Africa, threatening agricultural production due to a massive heat wave, the World Food Programme has urged the international community to support the upscaling of climate smart agricultural technology for resilience. During her recent visit to Zambia, one of the region’s foremost producers and exporters of maize and other crops, WFP Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin said the situation was a crisis that should not be allowed to degenerate into a disaster.

Africa: Public Procurement Benefitting Family Farmers and Schools

An innovative partnership spanning five African countries is providing important lessons on how governments can procure food for public institutions, such as schools, directly from small-scale family farmers. Modelled on Brazil’s achievements in fighting hunger and poverty, the Purchase from Africans for Africa programme (PAA Africa) helps promote local agricultural production while also improving livelihoods and nutrition.

UN releases new annual hunger report: SOFI 2014

The three Rome-based UN food agencies – FAO, IFAD and the WFP – have published a new UN hunger report. The State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI 2014) presents new estimates on the number and proportion of chronically undernourished people in the world and also reports on the progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and World Food Summit (WFS) hunger targets.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has said that the Central African Republic (CAR) is facing a dire humanitarian situation which the WFP is ill-equipped to deal with. With only 32% of the funds it needs, the WFP says it “will be unable to scale-up ahead of the planting and rainy seasons, or to respond in newly secured areas.”
