There is an acknowledgement among almost every culture that adversity breeds resilience, and that resilience is a key factor in the attainment of success. We use these metaphors and analogies in our interpersonal lives, but rarely do we use them to describe the journeys of nations and states. Yet history shows again and again that the prosperity of a nation is forged in the fires of adversity.
